7Z, or sometimes 7ZIP, is the native file format of the open source programme 7-Zip and uses the LZMA algorithm. This can compress files much more efficiently than the DEFLATE method used by ZIP. Like ZIP, 7Z archives contain one or more files and, if necessary, a structure of folders and subfolders. Depending on the content of the file, 7z archives can be up to 40% smaller than comparable ZIP files. The disadvantage, however, is that most operating systems cannot open 7z files without installing additional software.
ZIP, on the other hand, has been natively integrated into many operating systems for decades (i.e. without the installation of additional software). This means that ZIP files can usually be opened immediately.
If you have received a 7z or 7zip file, converting it to ZIP format is a good alternative for unpacking the file without additional software.
